A couple’s photoshoot can be a timeless way to mark a special time in your relationship…but for many couples, it can also lead to panic over what to wear! I’ve styled hundreds of families and couples for their special moments, and have come up with these top tips to help them prepare:

REFLECT WHO YOU ARE AS A COUPLE AND AS INDIVIDUALS

A photoshoot can be the perfect way to capture what makes you the awesome couple you are. Choose a location and wardrobe that speaks to what your relationship is about.

DON’T OVER-DO COLORS AND PRINTS

A photoshoot can be the perfect way to capture what makes you the awesome couple you are. Choose a location and wardrobe that speaks to what your relationship is about.

IF YOU’RE GOING TO KEEP THESE PHOTOS FOR A WHILE, STICK TO CLASSICS

Many people don’t re-do a couple’s photo session every year. If that’s the case for you, it’s safe to stay away from trendy pieces.  Neutrals, jewel tones, and classics that will stand the test of time.

COMFORT AND GOOD FIT ARE KEY

Make sure the outfit you select fits you well. Anything too large or too tight will not photograph well. Try the outfit(s) on first, and make sure they are well-fitting. If you really love a piece but it doesn’t fit right, investing in a good seamstress is a cost-effective way to feel like a million bucks. You want to feel comfortable and confident in your outfit, and that confidence will definitely come across in the photos.

BRING A SELECTION OF OUTFITS

Your photographer will suggest different poses, locations, and styles. Having a selection of outfit changes gives you choices and expands the picture possibilities. Sometimes, it’s as easy as swapping out heels for flats in a more casual pose or replacing a blouse with a t-shirt for a more casual look.

ACCESSORIZE TO BRING YOUR LOOK TOGETHER

Don't underestimate the power of a pocket square, statement accessory, or belt to polish off your look. As long as it is not too distracting, an accessory can take your look from “basic” to “put together”.

WHEN IN DOUBT, TURN TO A PROFESSIONAL

Squash the uncertainty and speak to someone who will pull your looks together. After getting to know your personalities and you as a couple, I can help you select outfits that will work best. Based on the recommendations above, you can select your own looks for us to review and I can give feedback, or we can shop for the looks together.

QUICK TIPS

  • Iron your clothes beforehand (it makes a huge difference).

  • Stay away from thin t-shirts (they're not flattering because they tend to cling to your body too much). This includes workout/golf shirts.

  • No hoods or hats. If you love your hat, we can include a few with it on.

  • Long dresses are tons of fun for movement.

  • If your goal is to look thinner, V-necks are recommended. Black is always a safe & flattering colour!

  • Your shoes matter, make sure they work with the rest of your outfit.

  • Avoid both wearing patterns (if one has patterns the other should have solid colours).

  • If you're getting a haircut, do it a couple of weeks beforehand

  • If you're prone to razor burn, shave the day before or the morning of.
